The Patron Saint of White Menageries.
THE PATRON SAINT OF WHITE MENAGERIES is an adult collection of surreal, gothic, and magical realism short stories.
PATRON SAINT combines the speculative elements of VAMPIRES IN THE LEMON GROVE by Karen Russell with the cultural specificity of HER BODY AND OTHER PARTIES by Carmen Maria Machado. The collection includes ten stories– some previously published in anthologies and some original.
The stories in this collection center around a California inhabited with haunted dreams of stardom and the price for fame that is often paid by Latine people, especially women. The titular story follows two best friends at their Catholic school, where girls and peafowl alike run wild. EL GRITO DE LA ONDA features a second POV character as they see a monster in the seafoam off of Summerland, CA, calling to them. The main character in VANILLA AND DUST can call down and control clouds. LIKE SATIN IN THE MOONLIGHT is a retelling of Giselle through a disabled ballerina in love with her famous rockstar friend. TIFFANY-TWISTED takes place in “The Hotel California,” inhabited by deceased celebrities. Themes include Latinidad, close family bonds, examinations of generational trauma, and critiques of Hollywood culture.
PATRON SAINTS is forthcoming Spring 2026 from Creature Publishing.
