Types of Editing for Novels and Anthologies/Short Story Collections
Beta Reading – A beta read is often the first stage of editing. At this point, I do not expect your novel to have been seen by anyone else. In other words, this should or could be a very rough draft. It should be complete in scope (aka all the chapters with a solid ending) but doesn't need to be ready for a developmental edit. With this package, I will give 2-3 paragraphs of overarching thoughts regarding the manuscript. In my role as a beta reader, I take on the role as a potential reader or audience member and my comments and concerns will reflect this role. This will be an edit in which I will point out parts that I enjoyed, moments the characters shined, and any possible questions I may have. This will be mostly made up of margin comments. I am available for follow-up questions regarding my notes. We can also schedule a meeting (phone or Zoom) to discuss my notes at the rate of $60 an hour. I will not include a developmental edit, second read of the manuscript, or line/copy edits.
$20 for the first 10 pages $75 for the first 50 pages Full manuscripts: $10 per 1,000 words
Developmental – A developmental edit would be the second stage of editing. At this point, your story should have already been seen by a few beta readers. It must also be past a first draft. Even if the grammar isn't perfect, it should be "readable." With this package, you will receive a detailed editorial letter of at least 2 pages with specific feedback on how to improve your manuscript. This will be focused on character, plot, overall arcs and motivations, worldbuilding, and other big-picture items. I will also make sure to put multiple margin notes in the manuscript related to these big-picture notes from my letter. AKA specific moments a motivation isn't working or questions regarding scope of the world. There may be some reaction notes from me ala beta reading. I am available for follow-up questions regarding my notes. We can also schedule a developmental meeting (phone or Zoom) at the rate of $60 an hour. I will not include a second read of the manuscript or line/copy edits.
$45 for the first 10 pages $90 for the first 50 pages Full manuscripts: $15 per 1,000 words
Copy and Line editing – A copy/line edit would be the last stage of editing. At this point, your story should have already been seen by beta readers and have had at least one developmental edit. It should almost be ready for publication– besides grammar and cohesion purposes. With this package, I will be focusing only on the ins and outs of your manuscript. In this edit, I will be going line-by-line through your document. I will be checking for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. I will also be noting capitalization or other syntax errors. This will be the spot for me to check to make sure names and descriptions are correct as well. After this edit, you should be comfortable self-publishing or sending the full manuscript off to an indie/small press or a traditional literary agent. I will not be assessing anything as a beta reader or a developmental editor. I am available for a follow-up meeting (phone or Zoom) at the rate of $60 an hour. I will not include a beta read or developmental edit of the manuscript.
